It was always a pleasure to see your story illustrated by someone popular. It's like a videobook. So, I got a taste of the good life when Mr. Cutts talked about my EXACT APPROACH to running my SEO Agency.
Listen at :40 (forty seconds) for the statement that best describes my consultancy.
What made me laugh about this one was that is exactly the approach I take in regards to my campaigns. I am the exact person to watch out for! You've been warned.
As long as the SPEC LIST is generalized in nature..."improve organic rankings", "increase brand awareness using the following methods: 1,2,3" then that's okay. However, there is no way I am going to prepare some kind of client report that micro-analyzes every single task item throughout the course of a month...wayyy too many tasks, proprietary strategies, and it's a loathsome task, at best, not to mention just bad for business.
If you've built a reputation for results, you can't be expected to disclose the specific strategy used unless that's been pre-agreed upon. By default, my answer is no. Ask me to prepare a client report? Not going to happen.
For those who might doubt my approach, I pose this statement: "If Brand X sells a product and comes to you for help based on your reputation then they don't need to learn SEO strategies to get results. They are learning SEO strategies to learn enough information to fire you. As soon as you become the instructor, the teacher, you'll be first chopped-off during any and all budget 'crunches.'"
That's the reality of the situation.
I think I'll form a site called http://angryseo.com
I could be the 'Angry SEO'.
